Trina May Smith:  A Pandemic Perspective

When the pandemic hit and sheltering in place and quarantining became an ongoing reality, social navigation changed dramatically. The abrupt change with patterns of daily life compelled me to make work about this experience.

This series of work began as a reflection of my intellectual disorientation as I adjusted to my living space becoming simultaneously my work and studio space. As a single person sheltering in place, my apartment became a space that only I was able to enter and was a barrier between myself and the world.

With the idea of accessibility in mind, I began taking photos of my apartment through a glass privacy block (commonly used for bathroom windows). The paintings with titles beginning with “quarantine” are reflective of this initial time of being isolated and alone. The framed warped image acts as metaphor for my own altered relationship with my personal space as well as reinforcing that the barrier
 exists.
